Magnet Flip-Over

Can you flip a magnet without actually touching it? It’s easy if you know the secret!

For this magnet experiment, you’ll need:

• One disc or ring magnet. If you need to purchase one that will work with this magnet experiment, try Dowling #731022
• One powerful magnet, such as a Neodymium (rare earth) magnet. If you need to purchase one that will work with this magnet experiment, try Dowling #731020

How This Magnet Experiment Works

Hold your open hand out, palm up. Place a ring or disc in your palm. Place the stronger Neodymium magnet under your palm directly beneath the first magnet. Now turn the magnet under your hand over and over until you are able to invisibly flip the weaker magnet in your palm. Try doing this activity through a variety of different objects, such as a glass or a table.

Why This Magnet Experiment Works

Magnetic fields are strong! They can exert their repelling and attracting force even through solid objects.
